Visit Skiathos, Greece (part 1)

Skiathos Town

Skiathos, part of the Sporades Group of islands off Greece’s east coast, is one of my favourite Greek Islands. A beautiful green island in a beautiful Aegean Sea setting. For many people the island along with its neighbour Skopelos is best known as the setting for Mamma Mia! the screen adaptation of the ABBA musical (more on that in a later article!)

In this the first of a number of articles featuring Skiathos I’m going to kick things off with a journey back in time. Skiathos may be a small island, but it’s steeped in history that dates back to ancient Greece. This picturesque destination has a real story to tell.

To me, understanding a place’s past enriches your travel experience. That’s why it’s crucial to explore the role Skiathos played in Greek history and mythology. This island was once a powerful naval base and served as a pivotal crossroad for trade and cultural exchange in the Aegean Sea.

You can visit fascinating historic landmarks, such as the Castle of Skiathos, Kastro. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, this fortress has withstood pirate raids and offers a glimpse into the island’s tumultuous past. The now abandoned settlement once boasted 300 dwellings and 22 churches. Then there’s the Monastery of Evangelistria, an iconic and important symbol of the Greek war of independence. It was at the monastery where the first Greek flag was woven and raised. Not too many monasteries have their own cannon! Nowadays it’s a beautiful and peaceful setting. If you want to dive deeper into the island’s heritage, there are guided tours that don’t just bring history to life, they connect you with the enduring spirit of the local people. You’ll learn about historic skirmishes, local legends, and how these events have shaped the character of Skiathos today.

Choose something that resonates with you, whether it’s a tranquil walk through the monastery’s gardens or a thought-provoking excursion to ancient ruins. Each of these experiences promises to add a layer of depth to your visit that the stunning beaches alone can’t provide.

But Skiathos isn’t just about its past; it’s also about the vivacious present. As we transition from the quiet reflection of historic sites, we’ll explore the everyday hustle and bustle of Skiathos’ places of interest. From the labyrinth-like streets to the vibrant markets, there’s a lot more waiting for you beyond the historical landmarks.

Skiathos’ Must-Visit Attractions: Beyond the Beaches

You might be tempted to think that Skiathos is all about sunbathing and swimming, but there’s so much more to this island than its stunning coastline. Tucked away on this enticing Greek retreat are hidden gems that encompass history, culture, and nature.

For a touch of Skiathos’ literary heritage, the Papadiamantis House is a must. As the former home of Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece’s most celebrated authors, it has been transformed into a museum that gives an intimate glimpse into his life and the island’s past.

If you’re drawn to the great outdoors, a visit to the Skiathos National Park will reward you with not just incredible views, but also a chance to walk through a Mediterranean haven amidst pine forests and olive groves.

Looking to engage with local culture? Spend a morning meandering through the streets, diving into local markets where artisans display their crafts. It’s a colorful way to support the community and find unique souvenirs. In our next article we’ll be delving into Skiathos nightlife, vibrant beaches and activities. Part 2
